What is this “The Linkening”?

From far back in the mists of time (circa October 2008) comes the tale of The Two. They existed as abstracts for eons, and in time took corporeal form to walk the Earth, seeking understanding and enlightenment. In due course, they entered The Academy, where they would learn much, but little of practical value. They sustained themselves on esoteric discussions and life-giving nectars of the distilled and fermented varieties. And as their physical forms grew ancient, a new light was born to the world, a series of tubes that allowed users from around the world to share knowledge and ideas, facts and fallacies, free porn and ads for v1agra.

The Mary spoke into this darkness, this labyrinth of electrons, and Brain heard her voice, and responded.

“It’s funny, sometimes I get things in my email, and I think, ‘Why didn’t so-and-so get this one? I’ll have to pass it along to him/her.’”
“I see what you’re saying, but I’m not sure what we can do about it. Isn’t that just the nature of the Tubes?”
“Well, yes, but there ought to be a place where we and our friends can sort of pool these findings. A place where interesting links could be collected.”
“Like a clearinghouse of links? Call Ed McMahon!”
“That’s on my to-do list. But I’m serious. We should have a blog or something where we all post links that we think might be of interest to others.”
“Sort of like popurls or digg?”
“Yes, but more focused on our interests and those of our friends. And, obviously, much smaller in scale.”

The fruit of this conversation is The Linkening.

About The Linkeners

Brain is a pseudo-intellectual wannabe with wide-ranging interests but little patience for seeing things through. Some call him a dabbler or a dilettante. Others are less polite. Amongst his interests are such diverse elements as: science, fiction, science fiction, arts, literature, language, society and culture, ecology and environmental issues, urban planning, politics, religion, paranormal phenomena, and the future. (He would also like you to ask The Mary if she is interested in aliens.)

The Mary wants to know who Brain thinks he’s calling “less polite!” But she’s a recovering grad student and is prone to these fits of paranoia. She’s interested in languages, science fiction, photography and a host of other topics. Not aliens, though. Why would you think that? Did someone tell you to ask that?

Mr Bitters likes bright shiny things and odd information.  He is a biological scientist by training, a critical curmudgeon for fun.

Melander is a joiner, but not a participant, so you probably won’t see anything from her.
